It’s time to get RADD. Since its incorporation in 1986 as Rockers Against Drunk Driving a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, RADD, “The Entertainment Industry’s Voice for Road Safety,” (formally known as Recording Artists, Actors and Athletes Against Drunk Driving), has been sharing its lifesaving message of responsible, substance-free driving through music. Artists talking from the heart reach their fans with RADDs’ simple message: Have Fun. Be Safe.

Back in 1993 the McCartney and Lennon families and Michael Jackson generously agreed to allow RADD to record an anthem version of Baby You Can Drive My Car, featuring, Paul, Ringo, and Julian Lennon, plus a host of cross-genre stars, to honor John’s mother who was killed by a drunk driver. Debuting at the American Music Awards in 1994, it is still playing on YouTube around the world.

RADD launched the Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk campaign with USDOT, the National Association of Broadcasters and the Ad Council that attracted over 100 recording artists, actors and athletes who each donated their voices, performances and video clips to fuel a PSA campaign that rocked the nation and generated an estimated $80 million in earned media, convincing an entire generation that driving drunk was dumb and dangerous.

Branching out to address other issues impacting young fans, RADD teamed with HBO in 2004 to produce America’s first teen underage drinking prevention campaign around its award-wining documentary, SMASHED: Toxic Tales of Teens and Alcohol. Following in ‘09 was Hit the Road/TXT L8TR, America’s first teen distracted driving awareness campaign. A partnership with Elle Magazine and Express Stores, it generated 44 million impressions to put distracted driving on young America’s radar.

RADD has been out in front reaching young audiences for four decades — and we’ve been winning. Until now. Our gains eroded. Deaths and injuries are rising despite government, corporate and NGOs’ best efforts. There are multiple issues. #1 on RADD’s radar — a lethal mix of drugs, drinks AND speed that’s growing unchecked among young adults. This is our fight and RADD’s unique niche. But we can’t do it without your help!

RADD is recruiting professional colleagues in the Entertainment Industry to help us fund, develop and distribute a cutting edge, science-based, music-driven campaign on multiple platforms. The goal is raising awareness of the dangers of that lethal cocktail, leading to sustaining behavioral change. Join us!

Sincerely yours,

John Velasco Mills                                                                                   Marc Jacobson
Chairman of the Board, RADD                                                          General Counsel, RADD

P.S. It isn’t rocket science, or the race for a million-dollar cure; just raising awareness leading to action. Car crashes are NOT accidents. Partying? Drive Sober and Slow Down. Or do a rideshare, crash on a couch, use a designated driver, or get a room. Your lifestyle is your business but if you take it on the road, it becomes everybody’s.
